On-Page SEO for Alberta Businesses: The Checklist I Actually Use

A practical on-page SEO checklist for Alberta businesses: search intent, titles, headings, answer-first content, internal links, local signals and quick wins.

On-page SEO is everything you control on the page itself. It’s also where I find the quickest wins on almost every Alberta site I audit. Here’s the checklist I work through.

1. Start with search intent

Before touching a word, look at what Google already ranks for the search you want. If the top results for “kitchen renovation Calgary” are all contractor service pages, a blog post won’t compete. If they’re all guides, a sales page won’t either. Match the format that’s winning.

2. Give each page one job

The most common problem I see is one “Services” page trying to rank for ten different things. Search engines and people both do better with one page per core service. If two pages target the same search, they compete with each other (keyword cannibalisation), and usually both lose.

3. Write titles that earn the click

A good title tag is specific, includes the main term naturally, and gives a reason to click. Aim for roughly 50 to 60 characters.

  • Weak: Home | Services | Smith Plumbing
  • Better: Emergency Plumber in Calgary, 24/7 | Smith Plumbing

Meta descriptions don’t directly affect rankings, but they affect clicks. Write them like a short ad: what you offer, where, and why you.

4. Lead with the answer

Put a clear, direct answer or summary in the first two sentences of the page. It helps readers decide quickly, and it’s exactly what featured snippets and AI Overviews like to quote. Then use descriptive H2 headings to break the rest of the page into the questions people ask.

5. Prove you’ve done the work

Google’s quality guidelines put weight on experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. On a service page that means real photos, specific examples, named team members, credentials, process details, honest pricing guidance and reviews. Generic copy that could belong to any business in any city does none of that.

6. Add local signals naturally

Mention the communities you serve where it’s genuinely relevant: project examples, service areas, travel times and local considerations. “We service furnaces across Cochrane, Bearspaw and Springbank” is useful. Repeating “Calgary SEO Calgary” twelve times is not.

Internal links help search engines understand which pages matter and how topics connect. Link from blog posts to the relevant service page, between related services, and from your homepage to your most important pages. Use descriptive anchor text instead of “click here”.

8. Optimise images properly

Compress them, use modern formats, set width and height to avoid layout shift, and write alt text that describes the image for someone who can’t see it.

9. Add structured data

Schema markup helps search engines and AI tools understand your page. Most service businesses benefit from LocalBusiness or Organization, Service, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList markup.

10. Find your quick wins

Open Google Search Console, go to the Performance report, and filter for queries where your average position is between 8 and 20 with decent impressions. Those pages are close. Improving the title, opening answer, depth and internal links on them is usually the fastest way to new traffic.

The checklist

Element What good looks like
Intent Page format matches what’s ranking
Focus One primary topic per page
Title Specific, about 50 to 60 characters, includes the main term
Opening Clear answer in the first two sentences
Headings Descriptive H2s that mirror real questions
Proof Photos, examples, credentials, reviews
Local Natural mentions of areas served
Links Related pages linked with descriptive anchors
Schema Relevant structured data validated
